The next version of OpenAI’s (OPENAI) GPT model, GPT-5.2, could be publicly unveiled as soon as next week, The Verge reported, as it looks to catch up to Google (GOOG) (GOOGL) in the generative artificial intelligence space.
The GPT-5.2 update is expected to close the gap between GPT and Google’s (GOOG) (GOOGL) Gemini 3, the news outlet added, citing sources. The release of GPT-5.2 had been scheduled for the middle of December, but could come as soon as Dec. 9, the news outlet added.
OpenAI did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Seeking Alpha.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman reportedly issued a “code red” memo to employees earlier this month, telling staff at the ChatGPT maker they need to speed up fixes and improvements for its chatbot amid increased competition from Google. He called for a “surge” effort to improve the chatbot, which would delay work on other projects such as autonomous AI agents and advertising.
Following last month’s release of Gemini 3, Alphabet shares have been on a strong upswing, and the family of models have received strong praise from industry analysts and tech executives, including Altman and xAI CEO Elon Musk. Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff said he would not return to ChatGPT after using Gemini 3.
Investment firm Coatue noted that the stocks of companies in the OpenAI ecosystem, including Nvidia (NVDA), AMD (AMD) and others, have seen sharp price corrections since the release of Gemini 3, while those inside the Google ecosystem have benefited. However, Coatue co-founder Philippe Laffont added that he expects a rebound in the stocks of the OpenAI ecosystem.
