Microsoft-backed (NASDAQ:MSFT) OpenAI continues to see usage surge for its artificial intelligence tools, prompting the company to consider spending up to $100B to rent backup servers from cloud service providers, according to The Information.
The money would be in addition to the $350B OpenAI has already planned to spend on cloud service providers through 2030, the report said, citing people familiar with the matter. OpenAI’s ChatGPT is approaching 1B weekly active users. It has experienced a handful of outages over the past year that sometimes lasted for several hours.
OpenAI relies mostly on Nvidia (NVDA) GPUs to power its AI software. Its key cloud providers include Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud (GOOG)(GOOGL), Oracle Cloud (ORCL) and CoreWeave (CRWV). OpenAI expects its revenue to reach $200B by 2030, which is also the same time it projects to start generating cash.
