OpenAI $6.5B funding round in final stages, investor list set to be finalized – report
OpenAI’s latest $6.5B funding round is nearing completion, Bloomberg reported citing sources, and investors are expected to find out if they’ve made the cut to join the deal on Friday.
The financing round is said to be oversubscribed, with investors lining up to pour more money into OpenAI than the AI startup was ready to take on.
Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT), OpenAI’s biggest and earliest backer, as well as new investors Nvidia (NASDAQ:NVDA) and Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) are expected to participate in the funding round. Existing investor Thrive Capital, which is leading the latest round, will likely spend $1.25B.
The latest financing will value OpenAI at $150B, a total that does not include the new investment, according to sources cited in the report. The company was valued at $86B in its last funding round.
Sequoia Capital, an existing OpenAI investor, will not participate in the funding round. It recently invested in another AI company Safe Superintelligence, established by OpenAI co-founder Ilya Sutskever this year.
