Despite speculation that Apple (AAPL) passed over OpenAI (OPENAI) to run its updated version of Siri, the ChatGPT maker made a “conscious decision” to sit out the move, the Financial Times reported.
OpenAI made a “a conscious decision to not become the custom model provider for Apple” in the fall of 2025 and would instead work on its own artificial intelligence device to go past the tech titans, the news outlet added, citing a person close to the company.
The person added that the deal is “two legacy players coming together, which makes sense for them.”
OpenAI and Apple did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Seeking Alpha.
Former Apple designer Sir Jonny Ive joined OpenAI in May 2025 to work on a new AI device. OpenAI has also reportedly been poaching Apple’s hardware talent and manufacturing partners for its new device.
Despite that “conscious decision,” OpenAI has an existing relationship with Apple. Apple announced a partnership with OpenAI in June 2024 at its developer conference that has ChatGPT integrated into Siri. ChatGPT is also integrated into Apple’s Visual Intelligence, which lets iPhone users learn about the world around them, akin to Google Lens.
Earlier this week, Apple chose Google’s Gemini artificial intelligence models to run its next version of Siri.
“After careful evaluation, Apple determined that Google’s Al technology provides the most capable foundation for Apple Foundation Models and is excited about the innovative new experiences it will unlock for Apple users,” Google wrote in a post on social media. “Apple Intelligence will continue to run on Apple devices and Private Cloud Compute, while maintaining Apple’s industry-leading privacy standards.”
The Apple-Google deal is a multi-year partnership is Apple is believed to be paying Google billions of dollars over the life of the deal.
