OpenAI (OPENAI) is working with G42 to build a version of ChatGPT that is suitable for usage in the United Arab Emirates, according to Semafor.
G42 is a state-backed artificial intelligence holding company based in Abu Dhabi. They are working with the Microsoft-backed (MSFT) OpenAI to create a specialized version of its popular chatbot to “accommodate local language, political outlook, and speech restrictions,” the report said. It is being designed specifically for use by the UAE government. The finished product is expected to be fluent in the local Arabic dialect and likely feature content restrictions. People familiar with the matter said it will also reflect a political view in line with the monarchy.
OpenAI has worked with G42 for years. They first partnered back in 2023 to bring AI solutions to the UAE and other markets in the region. Microsoft also helped the UAE set up two centers for AI research back in 2024.
OpenAI, Nvidia (NVDA) and Cisco Systems (CSCO), along with UAE-based MGX, announced plans last year to build a 5-gigawatt data center in the country.
