Just in time for holiday shopping, Perplexity is partnering with PayPal (PYPL) to provide a free agentic shopping tool that allows users to search for and purchase items from over 5,000 merchants.
The new app will be available for free download next week, according to CNBC.
By employing agentic AI, the new Perplexity app will scrape through browsing history to deliver more personalized search results and enable shoppers to purchase directly from a retailer through the Perplexity search engine.
PayPal (PYPL) merchants will serve as merchants of record to facilitate purchases, customer service, and returns. PayPal (PYPL) will also provide its buyer protection service to items purchased through the Perplexity app.
PayPal (PYPL) has a similar tool with OpenAI’s ChatGPT called Instant Checkout, integrating PayPal’s (PYPL) wallet and payment processing services with OpenAI’s e-commerce capabilities. While OpenAI receives a fee for these transactions, Perplexity has not disclosed if it will be compensated for directing traffic to retailers.
