Phillips 66 partners with NextEra to power Rodeo refinery with solar energy
Phillips 66 (NYSE:PSX) said Tuesday it will power its Rodeo refinery in California with a new 30.2 MW solar facility owned and operated by NextEra Energy (NEE) (NEP), making it one of the largest on-site dedicated solar facilities in the U.S.; financial details were not disclosed.
The solar plant will be built on 88 acres of land owned by Phillips 66 (PSX), adjacent to its renewable fuels facility in the San Francisco Bay Area, and will consist of more than 70K solar modules that will support the renewable fuels complex.
The facility, which is designed to generate ~60K MWh/year of electricity, is expected to reduce the refinery’s grid power demand by 50% and lower its carbon dioxide emissions by 33K metric tons/year starting in Q1 2025, Phillips 66 (PSX) said.
The company converted the refinery to producing renewable diesel from fats, vegetable oils and greases, after previously making gasoline and diesel from crude oil; the complex began processing only renewable feedstocks in March, achieving full processing capacity of 50K bbl/day in June.
