NextEra Energy (NEE) and Exelon (EXC) said Monday they were recommended by PJM Interconnection to develop a 220-mile, 765-kv transmission line connecting Pennsylvania and parts of West Virginia as part of the grid operator’s 2025 Regional Transmission Expansion Plan.
NextEra (NEE) and Exelon (EXC) said the transmission line would connect to substations that supply electricity to residents and businesses across the region, and the proposed bi-directional 765-kV superhighway would facilitate ~7 GW of power, which the companies called a decisive competitive advantage for attracting industrial investments and major employers.
The 765-kV lines can transfer 2x-3x more power than 500-kV lines while reducing transmission losses by 50%, the companies said.
The PJM board is scheduled to vote on final approval of the transmission project early next year.
