‘Predator: Badlands’ dominates box office with $40 million debut

20th Century Studios’ (DIS) “Predator: Badlands” slashed its way to the top of the weekend box office, opening with a $40 million across 3,725 theaters, according to studio estimates compiled by Comscore. The sci-fi action film also matched that figure internationally for a global debut of $80 million, easily taking first place in the first weekend of November.

Directed by Dan Trachtenberg, the film stars Elle Fanning and Dimitrius Schuster-Koloamatangi in a futuristic tale set on a distant planet where an outcast Predator joins forces with a human ally. With a per-theater average of $10,738, the PG-13 title also led IMAX (IMAX) screens, contributing $5.9 million domestically and $4.9 million overseas.

In second place, Paramount’s (PSKY) “Regretting You” continued its strong run, earning $7.1 million in its third weekend, down just 7% for a domestic total of $38.6 million. Universal’s (CMCSA) “Black Phone 2” followed in third with $5.3 million, pushing its domestic cume to $70.1 million.

Debuting in fourth, Amazon MGM’s (AMZN) “Sarah’s Oil” grossed $4.46 million and received an A+ CinemaScore, resonating with faith-based and family audiences. Rounding out the top five, Sony Pictures Classics’ (SONY) “Nuremberg” added $4.15 million, continuing its awards-season momentum.

Among other new entries, Lynne Ramsay’s “Die My Love” opened in eighth place with $2.83 million, fueled by critical acclaim for Jennifer Lawrence’s performance.

The overall top 10 films combined for $74.96 million, according to Comscore estimates.
