Apple’s (NASDAQ:AAPL) request to pause a court order, which allowed App Store developers to avoid paying commission for in-app purchases, was denied today in a federal appeals court in California, according to Bloomberg.
The ruling stems from a half-decade long legal battle with Epic Games, the creator of Fortnite. Apple hoped to block the order as it appeals an April ruling that determined the company was violating California’s anticompetitive laws by taking a commission on in-app purchases, the report said.
Epic Games, backed by China’s Tencent (OTCPK:TCEHY)(OTCPK:TCTZF), has been in a legal battle with Apple since 2020 over the iPhone maker charging commission fees on in-app payments.
The dispute started after Apple removed the Fortnite game from the App Store because Epic had developed a workaround to keep from paying the 30% fee on customers’ in-app purchases.
Fortnite, the popular multiplayer shooter game, was banned in the app stores of Apple and Google (GOOG)(GOOGL) back in 2020 for violating in-app payment rules. The game returned to Google’s Android devices worldwide and iPhones in the EU last year. It returned to Apple’s App Store last month.
