Warner Bros.’ (NASDAQ:WBD) Superman debuted with a commanding $122 million across 4,135 theaters, helping to drive a domestic box office haul of $195.6 million for the weekend of July 11–13, according to studio estimates compiled by Comscore.
Directed by James Gunn, the new chapter in the DC Universe earned an additional $95 million internationally for a global opening of $217 million. IMAX (NYSE:IMAX) contributed $30.4 million globally, including $19.1 million domestically, making it the highest-ever IMAX indexing for a $100M+ opener in the United States and Canada.
Following at a distant second was Jurassic World Rebirth from Universal (NASDAQ:CMCSA), which added $40 million in its sophomore frame for a strong domestic total of $232.1 million. The film’s global tally has now surpassed $529 million.
Warner Bros. (NASDAQ:WBD) and Apple Original Films’ (NASDAQ:AAPL) F1 The Movie held third with $13 million in its third weekend, pushing its domestic total to $136.2 million. The Brad Pitt-led racing drama also contributed $3 million to IMAX’s global box office this weekend.
DreamWorks’ (NASDAQ:CMCSA) live-action How to Train Your Dragon remake remained solid in its fifth week, earning $7.8 million and bringing its domestic cume to nearly $240 million. Meanwhile, Pixar’s (NYSE:DIS) Elio rounded out the top five with $3.9 million and a domestic total of $63.7 million.
In limited release, IFC Films’ (NASDAQ:AMCX) Abraham’s Boys: A Dracula Story debuted to $130,013 in 470 locations, while Sony Pictures Classics (NYSE:SONY) opened Don’t Let’s Go To The Dogs Tonight with $35,422 from just 4 screens, earning an $8,856 per-screen average.
Critically acclaimed Sorry, Baby from A24 continued to expand, pulling in $230,328 from 40 screens for a $5,758 per-screen average and a domestic total approaching $600,000.
