- Chinese officials are expected to approve at least some imports of Nvidia (NVDA) H200 chips by as early as this quarter.
The chips are expected to be approved for use by local companies in certain commercial applications, but will only be permitted for use by the Chinese military, sensitive state agencies, critical infrastructure, and state-owned entities on a case-by-case basis due to security concerns, according to Bloomberg, which cited people close to the matter.
- Meanwhile, Nvidia (NVDA) is planning to require that Chinese customers pay upfront on H200 chip orders.
In addition to the payments, Nvidia is also stipulating that chip configurations not be changed once the orders are placed. Customers will also not be able to cancel orders or request refunds, according to Reuters.
Reuters said the strict ordering requirements are being put into place because of uncertainty over whether Chinese officials would allow the chips to be imported once ordered.
