Tech Voices: Intel’s robotics spinout, Goldman’s AI coder, Tesla

  • Intel (NASDAQ:INTC) is spinning out its AI robotics unit RealSense with a $50 million Series A funding round. The company will be headed by Nadav Orbach, Intel’s vice president and general manager for incubation and disruptive innovation.

“The timing is now for physical AI,” Orbach told CNBC during an interview. “We want to develop new product lines. We see the demand and we see the need, and with where it’s at right now, the right thing for us was to raise external funds.”

  • Goldman Sachs (NYSE:GS) said it’s testing an autonomous coder called Devin that will work alongside its 12,000 human software developers. The program was developed by AI startup Cognition.

“We’re going to start augmenting our workforce with Devin, which is going to be like our new employee who’s going to start doing stuff on the behalf of our developers,” Goldman CIO Marco Argenti told CNBC. “Initially, we will have hundreds of Devins [and] that might go into the thousands, depending on the use cases.”

  • Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) has applied to Arizona regulators to expand its robotaxi service into Phoenix, with a decision expected by the end of the month.

“They have expressed interest in operating within the Phoenix Metro area,” Arizona’s Department of Transportation told Reuters. The agency added that Tesla has applied to test and operate the vehicles with and without a human driver.

Google’s (NASDAQ:GOOG) (NASDAQ:GOOGL) Waymo robotaxi service also operates in Phoenix and several of the city’s suburbs. Amazon’s (AMZN) Zoox robotaxi service is not currently operate in the area.
