Tech Voices: Nvidia-Synopsys; SoftBank CEO on Nvidia, AI; Shopify

Seeking Alpha’s roundup of statements, announcements, and remarks that could impact the technology sector.

  • Nvidia said it has bought a $2 billion stake in Synopsys (SNPS) as part of a multiyear partnership “to revolutionize design and engineering across industries.”

“CUDA GPU-accelerated computing is revolutionizing design—enabling simulation at unprecedented speed and scale, from atoms to transistors, from chips to complete systems, creating fully functional digital twins inside the computer,” said Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang in a statement.

“Our partnership with Synopsys harnesses the power of NVIDIA accelerated computing and AI to reimagine engineering and design—empowering engineers to invent the extraordinary products that will shape our future,” Huang added.

Huang also touted the partnership during an appearance on CNBC’s Squawk on the Street.

“This is a huge deal,” Huang told CNBC. “The partnership we’re announcing today is about revolutionizing one of the most compute-intensive industries in the world: design and engineering.”

Nvidia (NVDA) paid $414.79 per share for the Synopsys (SNPS) stake.

  • SoftBank (OTCPK:SFTBY) founder and CEO Masayoshi Son said he “cried” when his company sold its shares in Nvidia (NVDA) earlier this year and only did so because it needed more cash for projects such as OpenAI (OPENAI) and data center construction.

“I don’t want to sell a single share. I just had more need for money to invest,” Son said during an event in Tokyo, according to Bloomberg. “I was crying to sell Nvidia shares.”

Son also defended investing in AI, adding that those who warn of an AI investment bubble are “not smart enough” to see the potential return on investment.

  • Thousands of Shopify (SHOP) users had difficulties logging into the platform on Cyber Monday, one of the busiest shopping days of the year.

The outage appeared to peak at 11:00 a.m. ET, with 4,000 users reporting issues, according to Reuters.

“We are continuing to investigate and apply mitigations for the issues with accessing Admins and POS [point-of-sale] systems. Some merchants may also see an issue with POS checkouts, due to not being able to access POS systems. Online store checkouts are not affected,” Shopify said in an update on its status page at 12:39 p.m. ET on Monday.
