Tesla pivots to pricier Cybertrucks; halts orders for cheapest version
Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) no longer takes orders for the least expensive version of its Cybertruck, priced at $61,000, according to its website, as the electric vehicle maker prioritizes the costlier variants in the lineup.
The Elon Musk-led company is instead making its $99,990 dual-motor version, which has a 318-mile range, available for delivery as early as this month. Its $119,990 tri-motor variant with a range of 301 miles is available for deliveries starting in October.
Tesla’s (TSLA) bet on pricier Cybertrucks contrasts sharply with Musk’s earlier plans for the vehicle, famous for its trapezoid exterior design. In 2019, the billionaire entrepreneur estimated that the truck would cost $40,000 and travel 500 miles or more on a single charge.
However, Cybertruck became the best-selling EV pickup in the U.S. in Q2 2024 as its production more than tripled, Tesla (TSLA) said in July, noting that the company plans to achieve profitability for the lineup by the end of the year.
