Tesla plans six-seat variant of Model Y for China – report
Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) is set to produce a six-seat variant of its Model Y in China, with production expected to begin in late 2025, Reuters reported, citing people with direct knowledge of the matter.
At its Shanghai factory, Tesla (TSLA) has asked suppliers to get ready for a double-digit surge in Model Y production. However, it is unclear how the company will increase production at its plant, which is awaiting approval to expand on 172 acres of former farmland, the report said.
This decision comes as part of Tesla’s (TSLA) strategy to enhance the appeal of its Model Y, which has been a best-selling vehicle across all power types in China, with sales of 207,800 units recorded from January to June 2024.
A five-seat version of Model Y is anticipated to debut in early 2025, delayed from its original schedule.
Tesla (TSLA) expects China sales to see a boost in Q3, especially from the rollout of its Full Self-Driving by year-end.
