Tesla (TSLA) has agreed to buy over $2B in energy storage system (ESS) batteries from Samsung SDI over the next three years, according to The Korea Economic Daily.
This is the largest battery order for the South Korean company and adds another supplier of ESS batteries for the electric car company.
In addition to manufacturing its own ESS batteries at its Sparks, Nevada plant, Tesla (TSLA) also buys ESS batteries from BYD (OTCPK:BYDDF) (OTCPK:BYDDY), LG Energy Solution, and CATL (OTC:CTATF) (OTC:CYATY).
The batteries are used for utility-scale projects such as the Megapack, and for residential and commercial use such as the Powerwall.
