Tesla to buy $2B ESS batteries from Samsung SDI – reports

  • Tesla (TSLA) has agreed to buy over $2B in energy storage system (ESS) batteries from Samsung SDI over the next three years, according to The Korea Economic Daily.
  • This is the largest battery order for the South Korean company and adds another supplier of ESS batteries for the electric car company.
  • In addition to manufacturing its own ESS batteries at its Sparks, Nevada plant, Tesla (TSLA) also buys ESS batteries from BYD (OTCPK:BYDDF) (OTCPK:BYDDY), LG Energy Solution, and CATL (OTC:CTATF) (OTC:CYATY).
  • The batteries are used for utility-scale projects such as the Megapack, and for residential and commercial use such as the Powerwall.
