Tesla’s Cybertruck outsold the Ford F-150 Lightning in Q2
Ford Motor Company (NYSE:F) sold an estimated 15,645 Ford-150 Lightning vehicles through the first six months of the year, according to data from Cox Automotive. Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) ranked second with an estimated 11,558 Cybertrucks sold this year so far, easily outpacing the 6,570 estimated Rivian R1T (NASDAQ:RIVN) sales and 4,597 GMC Hummer Truck sales. For Rivian (RIVN), the temporary shutdown of a manufacturing plant was a factor.
The Cybertruck closed the gap considerably with the F-150 Lightning during Q2. The Cybertruck outsold the F-150 Lightning by an estimated 850 vehicles in the second quarter and was reported to be the best-selling vehicle priced over $100,000, with an average transaction price of $112,696.
“In the second quarter, the Cybertruck achieved an impressive feat by selling an estimated 8,755 units – an outstanding accomplishment in the EV truck market,” stated Cox Automotive director Stephanie Valdez Streaty. She pointed to the influence of preorders and pent-up demand, warning that evaluating sustained performance will be critical for the long-term success of the model.
InsideEVs highlighted that the case for electric trucks is still complicated, and that the segment still lags well behind sales for electric sedans and crossovers. The high sticker price and limited capabilities in comparison to gas trucks for heavy-duty towing and hauling are seen as holding back demand.
