Goldman Sachs analysts listed the top 20 stocks with the largest increases and the largest decreases in short interest as of July 31.

These are Russell 3000 (NYSEARCA:IWV) stocks with market capitalizations of more than $5B seeing the largest recent changes — increased or decreases — in short interest.

In a recent Hedge Fund Trend Monitor report, analysts said that short interest at the single-stock level has continued to climb in the recent months, but it is still below average for most sectors.

The median S&P 500 (SP500) stock carries short interest equivalent of 1.8% their market cap, ranking in the 22^nd percentile compared to history.

Consumer staples (XLP), utilities (XLU), and health care (XLV) have the highest short interest relative to history at 2.1%, 1.8%, and 1.8% respectively.
