Disney’s (NYSE:DIS) Tron: Ares electrified the domestic box office this weekend, debuting at No. 1 with an estimated $33.5 million from 4,000 theaters, according to Comscore. The sci-fi action film launched to a $60.5 million global opening ($33.5M domestic, $27M international) and will expand to China next weekend. Directed by Joachim Rønning, the film stars Jared Leto, Greta Lee, Jeff Bridges, Gillian Anderson and Evan Peters in a story about a powerful AI program sent into the real world on a mission that marks humanity’s first encounter with artificial beings.
The film also drew impressive IMAX (NYSE:IMAX) returns, generating $6.6 million domestically, 20% of its overall weekend gross, and $12 million worldwide, underscoring ongoing demand for premium theatrical formats.
Paramount’s Roofman opens solidly at No. 2
Paramount’s (NASDAQ:PSKY) crime drama Roofman, starring Channing Tatum, opened to $8 million from 3,362 locations for a per-theater average of $2,380 across the United States and Canada. Written and directed by Derek Cianfrance, the film tells the true story of a desperate father-turned-McDonald’s robber who seeks redemption while hiding in a toy store and falling in love. The ensemble cast includes Kirsten Dunst, Peter Dinklage, and Ben Mendelsohn.
Holdovers stay strong as prestige titles launch
Warner Bros.’ (NASDAQ:WBD) One Battle After Another, directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, ranked third in its third weekend with $6.675 million, lifting its domestic total to $54.5 million and global cume to $138 million.
Universal’s (NASDAQ:CMCSA) family film Gabby’s Dollhouse: The Movie followed in fourth place with $3.35 million, bringing its domestic total to $26.4 million.
Sony’s (SONY inspirational drama Soul on Fire opened fifth with $3 million across 1,720 theaters, offering faith-driven audiences a heartfelt story of survival and hope.
Limited releases generate strong buzz
Amazon MGM’s (NASDAQ:AMZN) After the Hunt impressed in limited release, earning $154,467 from just six theaters for a stellar $25,745 PTA ahead of its wider expansion next weekend. The Julia Roberts-led film drew major acclaim at Venice and the New York Film Festival.
A24’s If I Had Legs I’d Kick You also performed strongly on just four screens, pulling in $89,164 for a $22,291 PTA, buoyed by Rose Byrne’s award-winning performance and a 94% Rotten Tomatoes score.
IMAX highlights global sci-fi success
IMAX (NYSE:IMAX) reported Tron: Ares delivered 20% of its domestic total via the large-format screens. Internationally, the network benefited from ongoing hits such as Chainsaw Man: The Movie – Reze Arc and Kantara: Chapter 1 in Asia, and fantasy epics A Writer’s Odyssey 2 and The Volunteers: Peace at Last in China.
