President Donald Trump has finally hinted at one of the key changes he would like to see made to the Affordable Care Act, one of the signature legacies of former President Barack Obama that guarantees health insurance coverage for all Americans.
In a Fox News interview, Trump said that he would end the subsidies that are currently used to defray premium costs for lower-income Americans and that go to insurers. “I want the money to go into an account for people where the people buy their own health insurance,” he told Laura Ingrham, adding it would lead to better insurance and lower costs for consumers.
“They’re going to feel like entrepreneurs,” Trump added. “They’re actually able to go out and negotiate their own health insurance.”
The president also commented that the revamped health insurance program could be named after him. “Call it Trumpcare. Call it whatever you want to call it. Anything but Obamacare.”
Trump was criticized in September 2024 following a debate against former Vice President and Democratic nominee Kamala Harris in which he responded he has “concepts of a plan” in response to a question on what he would do to reform Obamacare.
