U.S. President Donald Trump said he will meet Nvidia’s (NASDAQ:NVDA) CEO Jensen Huang on Wednesday.
Trump is on a visit to Japan and South Korea, where he will meet global leaders and industry chiefs at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation, or APEC, events in Gyeongju, South Korea. Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping are also expected to meet.
Trump made the remark about meeting Huang in an address to business leaders in Tokyo on Tuesday before traveling to South Korea.
Meanwhile, Trump dined with business leaders, including Salesforce (NYSE:CRM) Marc Benioff, Apple’s (NASDAQ:AAPL) Tim Cook, amid his efforts to bolster Japanese investment in the U.S.
OpenAI (OPENAI) Co-founder Greg Brockman, Toshiba’s (OTCPK:TOSYY) (OTCPK:TOSBF) Taro Shimada, SoftBank’s (OTCPK:SFTBY) (OTCPK:SFTBF) CEO Masayoshi Son, Honda Motor President Toshihiro Mibe and Anduril Industries’s founder Palmer Luckey are also among the guests expected at the dinner at the home of U.S. Ambassador to Japan George Glass, Bloomberg News reported.
The event started with Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, for the second time in the day, announcing a series of new potential Japanese investments in U.S. projects.
Under a tentative trade deal reached earlier this year, Trump lowered and capped tariffs on Japanese goods in exchange for a commitment from Japan to fund $550B in U.S. projects. Lutnick said the deals announced Tuesday alone could account for about $490B in investment, though many of the plans are preliminary and cost figures represent the upper end of possible deals, the report noted.
Separately, Samsung Electronics (OTCPK:SSNLF) Executive Chairman Lee Jae-yong and Hyundai Motor Group Executive Chair Chung Euisun are expected to meet Nvidia chief Huang in Seoul later this week, The Korea Times reported, citing industry sources.
The expected meeting is likely to focus on semiconductors, autonomous driving, software-defined vehicles, and robotics, the report added.
Huang is slated to attend the APEC CEO Summit. Lee and Chung are also scheduled to participate in the event.
Nvidia did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Seeking Alpha.
Huang is set to give a keynote address at Nvidia’s GTC event in Washington on Tuesday, while investors could be looking for clarity on what chips the AI tech giant will be able to sell in China.
Trump is expected to meet Xi on Thursday. The flow of advanced technology between the two countries could be at the center of trade discussions, with access to Nvidia’s chips a key issue, Reuters reported.
