U.S. President Donald Trump plans to discuss Nvidia’s (NASDAQ:NVDA) advanced AI chips with his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, during their widely expected meeting on Thursday.
While taking questions regarding his meeting with Xi, Trump signaled that Nvidia’s Blackwell AI processors could be discussed.
“We’ll be speaking about Blackwell, it’s the super duper chip,” he said. Nvidia’s “super duper chip” appeared to refer to the GB200 Grace Blackwell Superchip—its most advanced AI chip.
Trump also praised Nvidia’s Blackwell chips, claiming that they are about a decade ahead of any other chip.
“That’s our country. We’re about 10 years ahead of anybody else in chips — in the highly sophisticated chips. I think we may be talking about that with President Xi.”
Although export controls have long barred Nvidia from selling its most advanced AI products to China, Washington eased restrictions in July on the company’s less advanced, China-specific H20 chips.
The president in August indicated he might allow Nvidia (NASDAQ:NVDA) to sell a downgraded version of its most advanced AI chip to China.
According to recent reports, China is stepping up enforcement of its import controls on semiconductors, including Nvidia’s (NASDAQ:NVDA) AI chips, with customs officers conducting stringent checks at all major ports.
China’s foreign ministry has said the country is willing to maintain dialogue with all parties involved to keep global industrial and supply chains stable, in response to reports of a Chinese regulator ordering companies to not buy Nvidia’s (NASDAQ:NVDA) AI chips.
