President Donald Trump on Thursday said that he did not discuss approving Nvidia (NVDA) Blackwell chip sales to China with President Xi Jinping, backtracking on his earlier remarks suggesting potential support for exporting a scaled-down version of the company’s flagship AI GPU.
Trump said he and Xi talked about Nvidia’s (NVDA) access to China in general and that it was up to Beijing to continue conversations with the chipmaker.
“We did discuss chips,” Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One. “They’re going to be talking to Nvidia and others about taking chips.”
Nvidia (NVDA) made history on Wednesday, becoming the first company to surpass a $5T market capitalization. The rally followed CEO Jensen Huang’s remarks at the GTC DC event, highlighting “visibility into half a trillion in sales” for its Grace Blackwell and Vera Rubin platforms through 2026.
The historic moment also occurred as Trump was expected to speak with China’s Xi Jinping about Nvidia’s flagship chip, a cornerstone of the company’s data center dominance.
