Trump slaps 10% tariff on lumber and 25% on wooden goods

U.S. President Donald Trump announced new tariffs of 10% on imported lumber and timber, and a 25% levy on kitchen cabinets, bathroom vanities, and upholstered wooden furniture, starting October 14, 2025.

These tariffs are set to rise further on January 1, 2026: 30% for upholstered wooden products, and up to 50% on kitchen cabinets and vanities for countries that do not reach a bilateral agreement with the U.S.

The administration’s rationale is that imported wood products threaten national defense capabilities, critical infrastructure, and economic stability by undermining domestic production and utilization.

The levies aim to “strengthen supply chains, bolster industrial resilience, create high-quality jobs, and increase domestic capacity utilization for wood products such that the United States can fully satisfy domestic consumption while also creating economic benefits through increased exports.”

The order added that wood products are used for “building infrastructure for operational testing, housing and storage for personnel and materiel, transporting munitions, as an ingredient in munitions, and as a component in missile-defense systems and thermal-protection systems for nuclear-reentry vehicles.”
