United (UAL) Flight 803, a Boeing (BA) 777-200ER, headed from Washington Dulles International Airport to Tokyo Narita Airport on Saturday suffered an apparent engine failure on takeoff but has returned safely to its origin.
The flight took off at around 1235p ET. Photos from the scene showed heavy smoke next to a runway as well as emergency vehicles.
The plane circled to dump fuel before landing at around 120p ET. No injuries have been reported, according to The New York Times.
The 777 involved, registration N78004, is 27 years old and has General Electric (GE) Aerospace GE90 engines.
