Warner Bros.’ (NASDAQ:WBD) horror hit Weapons held onto first place over the Labor Day frame with an estimated $10.2 million for the three-day weekend and $12.4 million over four days. Now in its fourth week, the Zach Cregger-directed thriller has grossed $132.4 million domestically and $234.6 million worldwide, according to studio estimates compiled by Comscore.
The big surprise came from Universal’s re-release of Steven Spielberg’s Jaws (1975), which bit into second place with $8.1 million for the three-day span and a projected $9.8 million through Monday. Nearly 50 years after its debut, the shark thriller still has box office teeth, boosted by strong IMAX (NYSE:IMAX) showings that accounted for 21% of grosses in the United States and Canada.
Sony’s (NYSE:SONY) Caught Stealing, a gritty Darren Aronofsky thriller starring Austin Butler and Zoë Kravitz, debuted in third with $7.8 million, heading toward $9.5 million for the four-day. Meanwhile, Disney’s (NYSE:DIS) Freakier Friday, the Jamie Lee Curtis–Lindsay Lohan sequel, placed fourth with $6.5 million. Searchlight’s (NYSE:DIS) The Roses, a reimagining of The War of the Roses starring Olivia Colman and Benedict Cumberbatch, rounded out the top five with $6.35 million.
Among specialty and limited releases, The Toxic Avenger Unrated scared up $1.76 million from 1,995 theaters, while IMAX’s (NYSE:IMAX) exclusive presentation of Prince – Sign O’ the Times generated $1.7 million.
Overall, the Top 10 earned an estimated $54.8 million over three days, down 40% from last weekend, but the mix of new entries and re-releases highlighted audience appetite for both nostalgia and edgy new fare.
