Monday – October 14
- Volatility watch – Options trading volume is elevated on Trump Media & Technology Group (DJT) and WW International (WW). The most overbought stocks per their 14-day relative strength index include Duckhorn Portfolio (NAPA), US Goldmining (USGO), and AppLovin (APP). The most oversold stocks per their 14-day Relative Strength Index include Verses AI (OTCQB:VRSSF), EnVVeno Medical (NVNO), and Humana (HUM). Short interest is elevated on Scholar Rock Holding (SRRK) and Blink Charging (BLNK) ahead of the earnings season.
- All week – The Paris Motor Show will include BYD Company (OTCPK:BYDDF) showing off a new SUV aimed at European markets and Tesla (TSLA) introducing the Cybertruck to the continent. Vehicles expected to make their debut include the Renault Twingo E-Tech electric prototype, the Volkswagen (OTCPK:VLKAF) Tayron seven-seat SUV, the Alfa Romeo Junior Ibrida, and the Leapmotor B10 C-segment SUV.
- All day – OPEC will release its monthly oil market report.
- 2:00 p.m. Adobe (ADBE) will hold a Q&A session with company leadership at the Adobe Max event.
- 3:00 p.m. Federal Reserve Board Governor Christopher Waller will speak on the economic outlook before the “A 50-Year Retrospective on The Shadow Open Market Committee and Its Role in Monetary Policy” conference hosted by Stanford University.
Tuesday – October 15
- Earnings watch – Notable companies due to report include Charles Schwab (SCHW), UnitedHealth Group (UNH), Johnson & Johnson (JNJ), Bank of America (BAC), Goldman Sachs (GS), Citigroup (C), Rio Tinto (RIO), PNC Financial (PNC), State Street (STT), Walgreens Boots Alliance (WBA), and United Airlines (UAL). Options trading implies a 7% swing in share price for Albertsons Companies (ACI) as traders eye the pending merger with Kroger (KR).
- All day – It is the FDA action date for Intercept Pharmaceuticals’ Ocaliva. The decision could have some implications for Mirum Pharmaceuticals (MIRM).
- All day – Hong Kong-based Samfine Creation Holdings Group (SFHG) is expected to start trading after pricing its IPO. The IPO lockup periods expire for blocks of shares of Ibotta (IBTA), Centuri Holdings (CTRI), Serve Robotics (SERV), and Mingteng International (MTEN).
- All day – Notable investor events include Charles Schwab’s (SCHW) business update call and the appearances by Capricor Therapeutics (CAPR), NeuroBo Pharmaceuticals (NRBO), Ocugen (OCGN), and Vivani Medical (VANI) at the three-day Maxim Healthcare Summit.
- All day – Lenovo (OTCPK:LNVGY) will hold its Tech World 2024 event. The company is expected to highlight its comprehensive portfolio of AI solutions, services, and devices. The event will also feature a high-profile group of speakers, including from Lenovo CEO Yuanqing Yang, Nvidia (NVDA) CEO Jensen Huang, Intel (INTC) CEO Pat Gelsinger, Microsoft (MSFT) CEO Satya Nadella, Meta (META) CEO Mark Zuckerberg, AMD (AMD) CEO Dr. Lisa Su, and Qualcomm (QCOM) CEO Christiano Amon.
- 4:00 a.m. The IEA will release its monthly oil market report.
- 10:00 a.m. The National Retail Federation will hold a media call to release its retail sales forecast for the 2024 winter holiday season.
- 11:00 a.m. The U.S. Treasury will make its buyback announcement.
- 11:30 a.m. San Francisco Federal Reserve Bank President Mary Daly will speak and participate in a moderated conversation at an event hosted by the New York University Stern School of Business.
Wednesday – October 16
- Earnings watch – Notable companies due to report include Abbott Laboratories (ABT), Morgan Stanley (MS), U.S. Bancorp (USB), CSX (CSX), and Discover Financial (DFS). Options trading implies a large swing in share price for Alcoa (AA) after it releases its report.
- All day – British American Tobacco (BTI) will hold its Capital Markets Day in Southampton, UK. The tobacco stock has rallied in the past following similar events.
- All day – The IEA will publish its World Energy Outlook 2024.
- All day – EU leaders will meet in Brussels to discuss issues including competitiveness, Ukraine, and the Middle East.
- All day – Notable investor events include Okta’s (OKTA) Investor Summit, Ulta Beauty’s (ULTA) Investor Day, Cytokinetics’ (CYTK) Analyst Day, Republic Services’ (RSG) business update call, and SentinelOne’s (S) investor technology session at OneCon.
Thursday – October 17
- Earnings watch – Notable companies due to report include Netflix (NFLX), Blackstone (BX), Travelers (TRV), and KeyCorp (KEY).
- 8:15 a.m. The European Central Bank will make its monetary policy statement. The ECB is expected to cut benchmark interest rates by 25 basis points.
- 8:30 a.m. The September Retail Sales report will be released. Economists expect core retail sales to be up 0.4% month-over-month. A strong retail sales print could reset expectations for the FOMC meeting in November.
Friday – October 18
- Earnings watch – Notable companies due to report include Procter & Gamble (PG), American Express (AXP), and Regions Financial (RF). Options trading implies a large swing in share price for Ally Financial (ALLY) after it releases its report.
- 8:30 a.m. Procter & Gamble (PG) will hold its earnings call. The key metric to watch is organic sales growth, which is forecast to be up 2.2% year-over-year, split between incremental pricing and volume gains. The P&G update from management on the upcoming conference call could be of interest to peers Church & Dwight (CHD), Kimberly-Clark (KMB), Colgate-Palmolive (CL), and Clorox (CLX). Notably, Glatfelter (GLT) derives 16% of its revenue from P&G and could be impacted as well.
- 10:00 a.m. Minneapolis Federal Reserve Bank President Neel Kashkari will moderate a morning keynote policy panel before the “Macroeconomic Policy Perspectives: Banking, Regulation, and Macroeconomic Outcomes” conference hosted by the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis.
- 1:15 p.m. Seeking Alpha VP of Quantitative Strategy Steve Cress will speak at the Orlando MoneyShow.
