A record number of Americans are expected to travel more than 50 miles from home over the July 4th holiday period, according to an annual survey by the American Automobile Association (“AAA”), nearly 2M more than last year.
“Following Memorial Day’s record forecast, AAA is seeing strong demand for road trips and air travel over Independence Day week. With the holiday falling on a Friday, travelers have the option of making it a long weekend or taking the entire week to make,” said AAA’s VP of Travel, Stacey Barber.
With gas prices at a 4-year low, 61.6M people are expected to travel by car, up 2.2% from last year, while 5.84M will travel by air, up 8% year-over-year, and 4.78M by bus, train or cruise for a total of 72.16M travelers over the period between June 28 to July 6.
Top domestic destinations include Orlando, Florida, Seattle, Washington, and New York City. The top three international destinations include Vancouver, Canada, Rome, Italy, and Paris, France.
