U.S. memory chipmaker Micron Technology (MU) will invest 1.5T yen ($9.6B) to build a production facility in western Japan for chips to power AI computing, Nikkei Asia reported on Saturday, citing people familiar with the matter.
Micron’s (MU) decision is aimed at diversifying its advanced chip production away from a concentration in Taiwan, Nikkei said. The new factory will make next-generation high-bandwidth memory chips, a core component of AI chips.
Micron (MU) will start building the new factory in May 2026, Nikkei said, with a plan to launch shipments of the high-bandwidth memory chips around 2028. Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry will subsidize the project to the tune of up to 500B yen, Nikkei added.
Micron (MU) did not immediately respond to Seeking Alpha’s request for comment.
