Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) on Tuesday announced its first water replenishment projects in Mexico, partnering with global water technology firm Xylem (NYSE:XYL) to tackle one of the country’s most pressing challenges: widespread water loss from aging infrastructure.
The initiatives, located in Mexico City, Monterrey and the Querétaro metropolitan area, are expected to replenish more than 2.5 billion liters of water annually, the equivalent of 1,000 Olympic-sized swimming pools, according to Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN).
In Mexico City, where roughly 40% of water is lost through leaks, Amazon (AMZN) and Xylem (NYSE:XYL) will deploy AWS-powered pressure management systems that identify and reduce high-pressure zones to minimize pipe bursts and seepage. Monterrey will also benefit from similar smart water technologies.
In Querétaro, home to a newly opened AWS region, Amazon (AMZN) is collaborating with Aquestia to install water-pressure management tools designed to deliver immediate water savings by reducing leakage in existing infrastructure.
Amazon (AMZN) said the projects are part of its broader commitment to address water scarcity in regions where it operates. The company aims to use technology to deliver measurable conservation results while supporting local communities.
