The Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority is taking action to lure Canadians back to the region.
The outreach follows a string of disappointing months of sharply lower tourists from Canada, linked to President Donald Trump’s comments suggesting annexing Canada that led to an organized boycott.
“A portion of our friends in Canada are not happy with us right now,” stated Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority CEO Steve Hill based on reporting from The Nevada Independent. “We want them to come back, but we understand they may not be ready to do that,” he added.
Hill and his staff went to Vancouver, British Columbia, as part of a mission to discuss with Canadian counterparts ways to repair the rift that has cost Las Vegas its largest source of international visitation.
“We’re here, the city continues to improve and continues to create new experiences for you. We’re ready when you’re ready,” highlighted Hill.
Separately, some hotels and casinos are turning slightly more promotional with dining credits and room specials to spur bookings. MGM Resorts (NYSE:MGM), Caesars Entertainment (NASDAQ:CZR), and Resorts World have also waived some resort and parking fees. The Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority recently launched a new “Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas” campaign that will be featured during NFL games.
Despite the decline in the number of tourists, Las Vegas Strip gaming revenue grew by 5.6% in July on strong hold rates for table games and slot machines.
