Meta Platforms’ (NASDAQ:META) CEO is assembling a team of experts to achieve artificial general intelligence, Bloomberg News reported.
Zuckerberg has prioritized recruiting for the new team, referred internally as a ‘superintelligence group,’ the report added, citing people with knowledge of his plans. He intends to recruit from a group of AI researchers and engineers whom he has met in recent weeks at his homes in Lake Tahoe and Palo Alto.
Artificial general intelligence, or AGI, refers to the hypothetical intelligence of a machine that has the ability to understand or learn any intellectual task that a human can.
Meta did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Seeking Alpha.
Zuckerberg is building the team simultaneously with a potential $10B investment in Scale AI, which offers data services to help companies train their models. Scale AI founder Alexandr Wang is anticipated to join the group after a deal is done, the report noted.
The CEO’s plans to recruit nearly 50 people for the new team, including a new head of AI research, almost all of whom he is recruiting personally, according to the report.
Zuckerberg’s plans to recruit personally is driven in part by frustration over the performance and reception of Meta’s latest large language model Llama 4, the report added.
The latest release in April was a disappointment to Zuckerberg, who had repeatedly told Meta insiders he wanted the best AI offering in terms of utilization and performance by the end of the year, the report noted.
Meta previously delayed plans to release its largest model yet called Behemoth, which it had touted as better than rival models from OpenAI, Anthropic and Alphabet’s Google (GOOG) (GOOGL), The Wall Street Journal reported.
It is not clear how the new group will work beside Meta’s existing AI teams. Some staff members are expected to move to the new unit, the report added.
