Netflix looking to score TV rights for UEFA Champions League games: report

Netflix (NASDAQ:NFLX) is expected to make a bid for the global rights to show one UEFA Champions League soccer game per round as part of a shake-up of the league’s broadcast deals, which the European governing body believes will earn at least €5B ($5.81B) a year, according to a Wednesday report by the UK Times.

The report said UEFA and the European Football Clubs are changing the way they sell the TV rights to the Champions League and other European club competitions from the 2027-28 season.

Sources told the Times the expectation was for at least a 10% increase on the annual value of UEFA’s income from club competitions from €4.4B at the moment to €5B, and possibly even higher.

The American sports marketing agency Relevent is selling the rights to the competitions on behalf of UEFA, the report said.

Relevent is also expected to consider bids for the rights for between three and six years, the report said. UEFA has previously sold the rights every three years, but Relevent secured a six-year deal with CBS for the US rights from 2024 to 2030 worth $1.5B.
