Sinclair Inc. (NASDAQ:SBGI) said Friday it will reinstate Jimmy Kimmel Live! on its ABC-affiliated TV stations, just three days after media and entertainment giant Disney (NYSE:DIS) revoked the comedian’s suspension in the wake of his remarks on slain political activist Charlie Kirk.
“Over the last week, we have received thoughtful feedback from viewers, advertisers, and community leaders representing a wide range of perspectives,” Sinclair said in a statement. “We have also witnessed troubling acts of violence, including the despicable incident of a shooting at an ABC affiliate station in Sacramento. These events underscore why responsible broadcasting matters and why respectful dialogue between differing voices remains so important.”
On Wednesday, rival TV station company Nexstar (NASDAQ:NXST) said it held “productive” talks with Disney (NYSE:DIS) regarding Kimmel’s show but continued to preempt it on its ABC-affiliated networks.
Sinclair owns more ABC-affiliated stations in the U.S., totaling about 40, while Nexstar, being the largest local TV station in the country, owns about 30.
Kimmel’s suspension lasted only for six days after advocates from both sides of the political aisle disagreed with the move. Disney also witnessed a wave of subscription cancellations by users who viewed the action against the comedian to be harsh and as an attack on free speech.
